Event: COOKED: Survival by ZIP Code
Date: Tuesday, October 22, 2024
Time: 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM
Location: 3020 Willamette Dr NE, Lacey, 98516
Join the Community Action Council and the Thurston Climate Action Team as we explore the critical intersections between climate change, poverty, and public health, with a focus on the growing impact of Extreme Heat Events. Through a community viewing of the powerful documentary Cooked: Survival by ZIP Code, we’ll examine how these increasingly frequent periods of dangerously high temperatures disproportionately affect low-income communities, who often lack access to air conditioning, health care, and resilient infrastructure. Extreme heat not only leads to heat-related illnesses but also worsens existing health conditions, placing further strain on already stretched community resources.
Before the screening, we will discuss key systemic factors—such as housing inequality, economic disparities, and racial inequity—that heighten vulnerability to these climate-driven events. After the film, join a thought-provoking panel discussion with experts:
- Dr. Gordon Wheat, a retired physician with over 30 years of experience practicing medicine in Olympia, chairs the Olympia Physicians for Social Responsibility Climate Task Force. He serves on the One Health Committee for the Washington State Department of Public Health, addressing public health issues like antibiotic resistance, and is passionate about the health impacts of climate change.
- Stephenie Arnold, Energy Program Manager at the Community Action Council, has worked extensively to ensure energy services are accessible to vulnerable communities. She led efforts to provide air conditioning units to homes in need, safeguarding residents from the harmful effects of extreme heat.
Together, they will explore the challenges and innovative solutions for building more resilient, equitable communities in the face of climate change.
